Als 1882 die Freiwillige Feuerwehr Kohfidisch gegründet wurde, war das eine historische Tat.
Unser Land gehörte damals zum Königreich Ungarn und der Pflege des Feuerlöschwesens wurde viel Bedeutung beigemessen. Die Agrarstruktur des Landes - strohgedeckte Häuser waren vorherrschend - trug dazu bei, das es in vielen Dörfern zu verheerenden Großbränden kam. Es wurden "Feuerordnungen" erlassen, um Feuer zu verhüten, aber auch um die Bevölkerung im Falle eines Brandes mitarbeiten zu lassen. Man erkannte aber, dass es notwendig sei, Männer im Umgang mit Feuerlöschgeräten- bzw. Geräten zu schulen. Also musste die Feuerwehr also organisieren. Gerade unser Burgenland - damals westungarischer Raum - war führend in der Bildung von Freiwilligen Feuerwehren. Die Komidatstadt Ödenburg erheilt 1863 als erstes eine anerkannte Freiwillige Feuerwehr. In unserem heutigen Burgenland hatte Pinkafeld 1871 die erste Freiwillige Feuerwehr.
Mit Stolz dürfen wir sagen, dass es in Gyepü-Füzes (so hieß damals unser Kohfidisch) noch vor Oberwart (1883) zur Gründung einer Freiwilligen Feuerwehr kam.
Am 12. März 1882 fand die gründende Generalversammlung der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Kohfidisch mit 44 Mitgliedern statt. Protokolle der ersten Jahre waren wohl vorhanden, sind aber leider nicht mehr auffindbar, doch bestätigen nachherige Niederschriften und handschriftliche Aufzeichnungen dieses Datum. Protokolle ordentlicher Hauptversammlung sind ab 1897 vorhanden, lt. handschriftlicher Bezeichnung müssen aber vorher 33 Seiten eines Protokollbuches niedergeschrieben worden sein.
Als 1. Obmann (Präses) wurde Karl Gestettner (von Beruf Lehrer) gewählt, als 1. Kommandant Georg Wölfer. Die Feuerwehr wurde als Verein gegründet und geführt, dessen Leitung der Präsident hatte, die technische Führung oblag dem Kommandanten. Als weitere gründende Mitglieder sind noch die Namen Franz Polzer, Josef Holzer, Josef Schwab, Johann Wölfer, Georg Rosner, Franz Hansl und Josef Polzer bekannt, welche im Jahre 1932 als noch lebende Gründungsmitglieder ausgezeichnet wurden. Als Löschgerät wurde eine Handdruckspritze angekauft, die bis 1932 ihrer Aufgabe gerecht werden sollte. Es gab ausübende und unterstützende Mitglieder, der Stand betrug bis 1900 immer ungefähr 50 Mann, sank dann aber nachher bis auf 23 ab.
Auf Grund der schwachen finanziellen Möglichkeiten war es klar, dass nur sehr spärlich und langsam Requisiten und Uniformstücke angekauft werden konnte. Die Einnahmen beliefen sich um 1896 bei ca. 70 Gulden. Unterstützende Mitglieder hatten 2 Gulden zu zahlen, nachdem sich aber sehr wenig unterstützende Mitglieder fanden, wurde der Betrag auf 50 Heller herabgesetzt. Die Gemeinde leistete nur einen kleinen Zuschuss. Mit dem so eingenommenen Gelde konnten damit jährlich nur 3 Schläuche angekauft werden.
Der erste Kommandantenwechsel wurde 1892 durchgeführt, neuer Kommandant wurde Leopold Stangl.1902 löste Johann Polzer den Gründer Karl Gestettner als Präsident ab und verblieb es dann bis 1914. Ebenfalls 1902 erhielt die Feuerwehr ihre erste Heimstätte. Das Spritzenhaus bei der Bachbrücke (heute abgerissen) wurde in Betrieb genommen. Am 23. Juni 1907 hat der Verein den 25-jährigen Bestand der Feuerwehr abgehalten, welcher in jeder Beziehung einen sehr würdigen Verlauf genommen hat (wörtlich lt. Protokoll). 1908 wurde Johann Unger (Kaufmann und Schneidermeister) zum neuen Kommandanten bestellt.
Die Zusammenarbeit der einzelnen Feuerwehren klappte schon damals. Ein Brandbuch von 1909 berichtet, dass damals schon 8 Feuerwehren bei einem Brande in Kohfidisch erfolgreich im Einsatz waren. Die kulturell-gesellschaftliche Tätigkeit der Feuerwehr begann 1909. Laut Protokoll wurde damals der 1. Feuerwehrball abgehalten. 1910 mussten gleich bei 5 Bränden ausgerückt werden. Ignaz Weiss wird 1914 neuer Präsident des Vereines. Die Feuerwehrmänner wurden mit neuen Monturen ausgerüstet, allerdings auf Schulden.
Die Feuerwehr zwischen den zwei Weltkriegen
Infolge des 1. Weltkrieges hatte die Feuerwehr 1915 die ersten Verluste zu verzeichnen, das Angedenken an die Gefallenen wurde protokollarisch festgehalten. 1919 übernahm Johann Rosner (ein Bauer) für 5 Jahre die Kommandantenstelle. Rudy Janos (Johann) wurde 1921 bis1923 Obmann der Feuerwehr.
1921. Ein Jahr der demokratischen Entscheidung der Burgenländer. Der Anschluss unseres heutigen Burgenlandes erfolgte an Österreich. Auch bei uns trat eine Änderung ein - erstmals schrieb man statt Gyepü-Füzes den deutschen Namen Koh-Fidisch (heute Kohfidisch)
Der Gastwirt Alexander Holzgethan wird 1923 zum neuen Präsidenten gewählt. Im gleichen Jahr musste beim Spritzenhaus die ersten Renovierungen durchgeführt werden.
1924 wurde Karl Wagner (Schmiedemeister) Kommandant der Feuerwehr, er blieb es bis Kriegsende 1945.
Ein alter Wunsch der Feuerwehr ging 1925 in Erfüllung. Eine Vereinsfahne konnte am 2. August gleichen Jahres feierlich geweiht werden. Die Spender dieser Fahne sind heute noch auf einer vorhandenen Ehrentafel ersichtlich. Einen besonderen Beitrag leistete Frau Gräfin Pallfi mit einer Spende von damals 900 Schilling, wofür der Verein ein herzlichst Vergelts Gott (lt. Protokoll) aussprach. Diese Fahne wurde in der Schlosskapelle aufbewahrt und nur bei besonderen Anlässen in die Öffentlichkeit gebracht. Doch das Schicksal des 2. Weltkrieges brachte es mit sich, dass auch diese wertvolle Fahne wahrscheinlich von den Besetzern des Schlosses verbrannt wurde.
1928 wurde neuer und in der Geschichte der Feuerwehr letzter Präsident der Kaufmann Johann Unger. Die Chronik zeigt uns auch, dass eigentlich kein Jahr verging, wo es nicht zu Bränden gekommen wäre. Erwähnenswert auch, dass bereits in den späten 20 Jahren Dollarspenden von Amerikaauswanderer in die alte Heimat zur Feuerwehr kamen.

1932 war dann ein ereignisreiches Jahr und die Forderung wurde erfüllt. Der50-jährige Bestand der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Kohfidisch wurde am 19. Juni 1932 gefeiert. Das Fest war in allen Ehren Verlaufen (so wörtlich lt. Protokoll). Die alte Handdruckspritze war bereits seit der Gründung 1882 in Verwendung und endlich konnte eine Motorspritze angeschafft werden. Aber unter größten Umständen. Gekauft wurde ein tragbares Benzinmotorspritzaggregat der Firma Knaust mit einen vierrädrigen Wagen für Pferdezug (Besatzung 6 Mann) zum Preis von damals 7300 Schilling. Doch ergaben sich finanzielle Schwierigkeiten. Die Feuerwehr hatte zuwenig Geld, die Landessubvention ließ über 2 Jahre auf sich warten, sodass der Kommandant Karl Wagner und der Präsident Johann Unger persönlich haften und mehrere Wechsel unterschreiben mussten. Und wie bei der Vereinsfahne wollte auch hier das Schicksal, dass diese so schwer angekaufte Spritze in folgenden Kriegsjahren verschleppt (oder gestohlen?) wurde.
Im Jahre 1935 hat die Feuerwehr aufgehört ein Verein zu sein. Sie wurde im Zuge der Reorganisation des gesamten Feuerwehrwesens zu einer Körperschaft öffentlichen Rechtes erklärt, was eine grundlegende Änderung in seiner inneren Organisation bedeutete. 2 Gesetze und 2 Verordnungen von 1935 bildeten bis 1994 die rechtliche Grundlage für das Feuerwehr- und Rettungswesen, von Feuerpolizei und Feuerschutz. Nicht mehr der Präsident (Obmann), sondern der Kommandant hat seit damals die Führungsaufgabe.
Als Auszeichnung für gutes Arbeiten beim Brand am Postgebäude am 17.Dezember 1936 wurden der Feuerwehr 3 Einheiten Schläuche von Landeskommando übergeben.
In den Kriegsjahren wurde die Mannschaft durch Verluste auf den Schlachtfeldern immer schwächer und konnte nur mehr sehr schwer ihre Aufgaben erfüllen.
Die schwere Nachkriegszeit Nach Kriegsende musste die Feuerwehr gänzlich neu aufgebaut werden. Der Kriegsheimkehrer Georg Wagner wurde seitens der Gemeinde mit dieser Aufgabe betraut und wurde 1946 neuer Kommandant der Wehr. Eine neue Mannschaft wurde aufgebaut und 1947 wurde eine gebrauchte Motorspritze, Marke RW 80 in Betrieb genommen. 1949 wurde dann das neu erbaute Gemeinde- bzw. Feuerwehrhaus bezogen. Die finanziellen Mittel der Feuerwehr waren naturgemäß sehr gering.
So konnte erst 1953 ein altes amerikanisches Militärfahrzeug Marke Canada Ford (UNRA) als Feuerwehrauto angekauft werden.
1957 konnte ein Löschwasserbehälter in der heutigen Feldgasse in Betrieb genommen werden. 1958 nahm die Ortsfeuerwehr an den ersten Landeswettkämpfen teil und erreichte unter 65 Bewerbern den hervorragenden 7. Platz in der Leistungsklasse Bronze, ein Wanderpokal wurde vom Landeshauptmann übernommen.
Das 80-jährige Gründungsfest der Ortsfeuerwehr wurde am 12.August 1962 im Schlosshof feierlich begangen.

Danach wurde in der Gemeinde eine Wasserleitung erbaut und in diesem Zuge auch Hydranten für den Feuerschutz errichtet. Die Arbeit der Feuerwehr wurde damit wesentlich schneller und leichter. Die Alarmierung der Feuerwehr wurde durch Installierung einer Sirene auf eine völlig neue und schnell einsatzfähige Basis gestellt.
Der größte bisherige Brand in Kohfidisch war am 9.April 1968 beim Sägewerk Benkö, es entstand ein Schaden von über 3.Mio Schilling, doch der hervorragende Einsatz der Feuerwehr verhindert eine noch weit größere Schadensumme.
Wie sehr aber die Feuerwehr sich um den Schutz der Bevölkerung kümmert, zeigt ein anderes Beispiel. Ohne fremde Hilfe errichteten die Feuerwehrmänner händisch einen 20.000 Liter fassenden Löschwasserbehälter beim Gasthof Holzer am Csaterberg.
1969 wurde Ortskommandant Günter Baumann in den Bezirksfeuerwehrstab berufen und übernahm als Löschkreisinspektor den Feuerwehrabschnitt XI des Bezirkes Oberwart (Gemeindebereich Kohfidisch, Badersdorf und Dt. Schützen).
Eine Feuerwehr erlebt ja Einsätze verschiedenster Art. Ein ganz besonderer sei hier kurz geschildert. Um 2 Uhr früh des Faschingdienstag 1972 wurde die Ortsfeuerwehr von einem Busfahrer alarmiert, es brenne im sogenannten Kalten Eck, tatsächlich, dichte Rauchwolken lagen über der Gegend. Die Feuerwehr ging in den Einsatz, doch Minuten waren weder Rauch noch Feuer zu sehen. Was stellte sich heraus, die Gräfin hatte die Gewohnheit in jeder Faschingsnacht ihren Christbaum - einen Wacholderbaum - in ihrem offenen Kamin zu verbrennen, daher die große Rauchentwicklung. Doch zum Dank für den überaus schnellen und gutgemeinten Nachteinsatz bekam jeder Feuerwehrmann eine Flasche Wein aus dem gräflichen Keller.
Ein Meilenstein der Geschichte der Feuerwehr Kohfidisch war aber der 20.August 1972. Nach schwierigen Verhandlungen konnte die Ortsfeuerwehr als eine der ersten im Bezirk einen modernen Tanklöschwagen in Betrieb nehmen. Rund 400.000 Schilling kostete das Fahrzeug, Land, Gemeinde, die Bevölkerung und die Feuerwehr selbst leisteten ihren Beitrag. Die Zeit seither hat immer wieder bewiesen, wie sehr dieser Tankwagen bei vielen Einsätzen sich bewährt hat.
1974 konnte eine Schmutzwasserpumpe angekauft und damit der Arbeitseinsatz erweitert werden.
Da die Arbeit in der Doppelfunktion für den Abschnittskommandanten Günter Baumann zu viel wurde, übergab er die Funktion des Ortskommandanten an Stefan Rosner. Wieder wurden vom neuen Kommandanten Aktivitäten gesetzt. 1975 kaufte sich die Ortsfeuerwehr ohne jede fremde Hilfe eine neue Motorspritze, Marke Gugg. Zwei schwere Atemschutzgeräte konnten die Einsatzleistung wieder steigern. Dann kam etwas ganz Neues. Einfahrzeug- und zwei Handfunkgeräte verbesserten die Nachrichtentätigkeit innerhalb der Feuerwehr.
1978 übernahm Franz Balla die Funktion des Ortskommandanten.
Die seinerzeit größte im Burgenland stattgefundene Feuerwehrübung war im Raume Kohfidisch-Kirchfidisch. Feuerwehren der Bezirke Güssing und Oberwart waren hier im Einsatz, unserer Feuerwehr und dem ABI Baumann waren hiebei besondere Aufgaben zugewiesen.
In den den darauffolgenden Jahren konnte die Schlagkraft durch die Anschaffung neuer Ausrüstungsgegenstände, wie Hydroschilder, Ausziehleiter, erweitertes Schlauchmaterial und anderen Gegenständen weiter erhöht werden.
